About Coach O’Neal

I’m a husband, father of 4, and life long coach of sorts.

I grew up as an angry little competitor slamming bats in baseball, and playing several other sports. From a young age, what calmed me down after a strike-out or perceived “failure” was explaining game strategy to my mom (this took some time to figure out).

It’s no wonder that years later I would play every sport available to me, and when old enough, coach my younger brother’s basketball team while in HS.

After a major life changing (or life giving) event in HS, I became dedicated to making a positive impact and influence in the lives of young people. God knew where I needed to be, it just took me a little time to figure out what I’d been called to do.

From there my coaching and playing experience includes a Christian sports camp in Egypt, club and beach volleyball, golf, private school basketball, middle school PE/ football/track, 5A and 6A high school cross country/track/basketball, and summer camps every year since I was 17…to name a few.

I’ve had the honor of coaching alongside some excellent people and have been fortunate to find a strong Christian mentor at every stop. I’ve been a part of historic playoff runs, team turnarounds, and was honored as an assistant of the year to a coach I admire.

All that being said, the mission of this site and camp is not to sell you on me or any of my athletic accomplishments… Because the highest heights of athletic achievements do fade, but the feeling of overcoming, having fun competing, and who I am in Christ are what last.

I see sports as both, worth putting your all into, and just a game (something I have to tell myself often). As a coach and parent, I know that we can get caught up in the elaborate play or the comparison game. The winning strategy for both is to focus on the fundamentals while keeping “the big picture” in mind.

We started The Coachable Parent to navigate that dynamic and give something back from what we’ve learned.

See you on the court… field, pitch, course… you get the idea!
